Since its inception in 2010, ELOG has
steadily established itself as a professional, inclusive and objective citizen
election observation platform and has been able to speak authoritatively on the
electoral processes and the outcome. Congratulations on being selected as a
long-term observer (LTO) for the Elections Observation Group (ELOG) Long-term
observation program. In preparation for the 2027 general election scheduled for
August 2027, ELOG will endeavour to observe and report on all pre-election
activities that shape the Kenya electoral landscape.
The LTO program for which you have been
engaged on behalf of ELOG is key in the realization of this mission. As a
long-term observer, you will play a very critical role in enhancing the
realization of an electoral environment that is characterized by confidence,
transparency, and accountability, and one which provides voters with an
informed choice between real political alternatives. Your input as a long-term
observer will be crucial. You represent ELOG in your constituency and we will
rely on your observation for a comprehensive and representative picture of the
electoral process across the country.
This module lay emphasis on your duty to be
impartial at all times and report observations accurately and honestly. It is
your responsibility to read it over and over so that you familiarize yourself
with your roles and responsibilities. In particular, as this module will
outline, you are expected to internalize the observer code of conduct at all
times, understand the pre-election checklist and the reporting mechanisms.
Citizens not only have a right to genuine
elections; they also have a right to know whether the electoral processes
provided an opportunity for free expression of the will of the electorates and
accurately recorded and honoured the electors will. This can only be made a
reality by willing individuals (volunteers) like you who have offered to stand
out as specialized human rights defenders focused on civil and political rights
which are central to achieving genuine elections.
